History of medical intervention in South Africa

Good day,

I'm a visiting scholar at the Health Economics and AIDS Research Division (HEARD), and a PhD candidate at the University of Coimbra, Portugal.

I'm searching researchers and sources (books, articles, etc.) which can introduce me to the topic of medical intervention in South Africa, namely from the late colonial period through the Apartheid era. I'm particularly interested in the history of organizations pursuing such intervention, i.e. state agencies, missions (Christian and of other affiliation), private companies and academic institutions. Could someone at your department assist me with this? I would be very much happy to visit it.

Thank you for your support,

Ricardo Pereira

History of medical intervention in South Africa

Dear Ricardo,

You have come to the right place, with three of us at least working in this area. I suggest you begin with Anne Digby's book 'Diversity and Division in Medicine: Health care in South Africa from the 1800s' (Peter Lang: 2006). We should also set up a meeting to chat further. You can email me directly to arrange this.
